For their July and August project, FIRST aided Heart to Heart International. Heart to Heart International has been creating healthier communities since 1992. Through volunteer-driven efforts, they provide medical education, deliver medical aid, respond to people in crisis and address community-health concerns across America and around the world. Heart to Heart has one goal: Transform lives through service- one volunteer and one community at a time.
FIRST contributed to Heart to Heart by making Care Kits. Care Kits are made up of items that will bring comfort, health and peace of mind to those who receive it. Heart to Heart relies on volunteer movements to acquire, prepare and send the kits, which are shipped from their Global Distribution Center in Kansas City.
Over 150 Care Kits were completed thanks to FirsTrust and its employees’ by donating hand towels, washcloths, combs, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, and bandages. Once the items were collected, several volunteers then constructed the kits into plastic ziplock containers and delivered them to Heart to Heart’s Global Distribution Center in Kansas City.
As Kansas City’s only food bank, Harvesters is a clearinghouse for the collection and distribution of food and related household products. They’ve been helping people in need since 1979 by collecting food and household products from community and industry sources as well as distributing those products and providing nutrition services through a network of nonprofit agencies.
At the event, FIRST volunteers at Sun Fresh grocery stores were provided with grocery bags with fliers to pass out to customers. Volunteers asked customers entering the store if they would like to purchase an extra canned good or two for Harvesters to help feed hungry people in the community. During the weekend that FIRST volunteered, at just one location, 991 pounds of food was collected. This food will be used to provide 762 meals to the community!
From the Harvester’s Representative:

May’s event was a Bowl-a-Rama fundraiser for the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention or AFSP. AFSP is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide. For a minimum $20 donation, bowlers received two hours of unlimited bowling, pizza, soft drinks and shoe rental. Funds raised went to FirsTrust employee, Erica Hill, for her participation in June’s Out of the Darkness Walk in New York City and to AFSP itself. The walk takes place overnight and into the morning to represent the movement out of depression and into a brighter tomorrow. The goal for this event was to raise $2000 – and our efforts proved to be fruitful! With the charity of our friends and families, we were able to raise over $2500 for Erica and AFSP! A huge thank you to all who participated and helped us exceed our goal.

We just finished wrapping up our April event for Prairie Village’s annual Springtime in the Village’s Steps to the Cure. This event took place just outside of Brighton Gardens, an assisted living community, to celebrate the lives of those in the fight against Parkinson’s disease. Showing up to volunteer on this cold morning were 17 FIRST members and family to help participate in monitoring the event’s 5K run and to work the different stations for the Classic Car show. During the 5k run, FIRST members served as course monitors, rooting for and ensuring that the runners were staying on course. For the Classic Car show, our responsibilities included registering the cars for the show, running the concession stand, monitoring the prize table, and directing traffic for the cars.
We even had two of our very own FirsTrust employees compete in the 5K race; Adriana Bates and Deb Sierck!
For FirsTrust’s kick off Community Outreach Project we worked with Care of Poor People, otherwise referred to as COPP, collecting donations. COPP is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping those that are struggling financially in our community. This organization aids people who have fallen into hard times and simply need some assistance with the basic necessities to live.
FIRST was able to help provide for an event COPP holds each year called the Spring Break Event. We collected women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, food toiletries and cash donations. After tallying all the donations given by employees of FirsTrust, our contributions totaled $3,059. Three FIRST members delivered the items to the Spring Break Event location.
